Black individuals with disabilities have the lowest employment rates in the region

WORKFORCE
– In the Greater Washington region, almost 56% of individuals with disabilities are employed. While this number is greater than the nationwide statistic, the employment rates are not equal across race in the region. Sixty-six percent of Asians, 61% of Latinx, and 59% of whites with disabilities are employed here, but only 48% of Blacks with disabilities are employed. (WAMU, 10/17)

“If you look at the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), employment is central to its goals, and [the country has] a lot more to do on that front,” Martha Ross, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, says. Equal opportunity for employment, along with full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency are objectives clearly articulated by the ADA.

“A lot of what is necessary to fix this is what’s necessary for good workforce development policy overall,” Ross says. “We have to look at employers and make sure they know that this is a good pool from which to draw, know how to recruit folks, and to accommodate them if necessary.”
